Apothecary

Apothecary By: Maile Meloy

Janie Scott is not happy about her parents making them move to London.  She doesn't understand why they are running away from America, and she is upset about leaving.  Janie meets Benjamin, the apothecary's son, and they are thrown into a strange adventure when his father is taken. Before he is kidnapped Benjamin's father gives them a book and tells them to protect it.  This book is full of potions and spells that Janie and Benjamin do not understand.  Soon Janie and Benjamin are in a race to solve this mystery before things get worse.

This was a very adventurous and fun book to read.  Set in 1952 in the aftermath of World War 2 this book has a ton of interesting elements. I enjoyed how the characters decided to take things into their own hands, and try to solve the mysteries so that they could save help.  I loved the magical elements, when they were able to escape by turning into birds.  Great read.  This book also won the E.B. White Read Aloud Award, and the story will continue in The Apprentices.

I purchased this book from Mostly Books a local book store.
