The Twin by Gerbrand Bakker

Set in the Netherlands on a beautiful sunny farm, this story presents the life of Helmer and the ghost of his twin brother, Henk. Henk is athletic, good looking and the favorite of Helmer's father. He tragically is killed before his wedding to the beautiful Riet. Helmer has to return to the family farm to work. He later has to care for his ailing and crippled father. We learn of his anger and longing that stemmed from his brother's death. The story twists when Riet contacts Helmer for help with her teenage son. Helmer agrees to have him come work on the farm to "straighten him up". Of course, what happens is healing and transformation in Helmer as he dives into his father figure role. Who would have thought a book about a middle aged man would be such a good read?
