Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings BY: Helene Boudreau
Jade is relaxing in a bath when she wakes up and has a mermaid tale. Thinking she is having a bad dream or something is completely wrong she yells for her father. Instead of freaking out he calmly sits down and says sorry we thought this might happen to you! What? Jade finds out that her mother, who drowned the year before, was a mermaid that was allowed to live on land, and apparently Jade has the ability to live on land and the water. Jade has no idea how to tell even her best friend in the whole world what is happening and so she hides who she is, and then the unexpected happens. Jade thinks she has found her mother. But can Jade tell her best friend, and what about the cute boy who she keeps running into?
I thought this was a cute tween read. It is silly and totally unbelievable but perfect for the tween set. I thought the characters were good because they showed what normal tweens are going through. You have a best friend, they make a new friend who you do not like, and you begin to feel left out. It shows them the emotions that many of them are probably going through. There are two more in the series, Real Mermaids Don't Hold Their Breath and Real Mermaids Don't Have Two Left Feet
